SFA: What's the Answer?

IKEA Cabinets and Natural Stone

Christopher Connolly

Is anyone actually installing granite on IKEA cabinets? It has always been our policy to only use quartz. Usually small runs. Here lately, I've had a lot of customers coming in for natural stone and on islands. What are everyone's thoughts on this? Still a no-go?

David Wong

Is there a reason why natural stone can’t be installed?

Christopher Connolly

We had issues a long time ago with structural support and level on IKEA cabinets and the previous owners pretty much banned them. I have taken over management at the shop in the last couple years and have since done a few that went well. They were all simple sink runs and stove pieces with quartz. This is the first time I've had a customer request a 44 ft² island. Guess I'm still a little nervous from the old days where we simply turned anyone with these cabinets away.

I do similar things, like I don’t allow for stainless dual mounts.

Pedro Israel Trejo-Cabrera

How come?

Maridene Parr

Dual mounts are a farce. If they are used as an undermount, the lip from the drop in aspect leaves a larger opening requiring more epoxy. That’s ONE reason.

Boris Andrijic

We do it (natural stone on IKEA) as long as the cabinets are leveled and supported properly.

Colin O'Meara

Of course we do.

Antonio Ageeb

During the site visit, we advise clients of any issues that can give them short/long-term problems with their countertops - either they accept liability or not accept liability ... or correct these issues and then re-inspect.

Melanie Moore

Been doing it for 20+ years..

Billy Wierzgac

Those cabs suck, but install what they want.

William Suarez

We do it. The free-standing islands always need extra people to hold the base cabinets down as the weight will push them over.

Christopher Connolly

That is one of my main concerns.

William Suarez

You need 2 people holding the cabinets and 2 tilting the stone.

Tony Neylon

Just need to apply more shims to give a good base then stick it.

Kyle Snowden

We were IKEA installer for tops for several years, and I watched our main guy turn away all business from them because they got mad about the problem. It was a problem then and still is now. If you install, no warranty on that shit. It will fail.

Dustin Carter

Drawers just have to be adjusted after install due to the weight. We let the cabinet guy do that.

B.J. Eazi

They are trash cabs but stone is fine as long as you shim it on the walls.

Travis Harper

All the time.
